Heat-Related Injuries and Pets

By June 25, 2024 No Comments

Summer is a wonderful time for both people and pets. Our warm North Carolina summers invite us to spend more time outdoors, enjoying nature, playing in the park, or simply lounging in the backyard. However, as temperatures and humidity rise, so do the risks associated with heat for our furry friends. At Friendship Animal Hospital, we want to ensure that your pets remain safe and comfortable during the hot months. Here’s what dog and cat owners should know about the dangers of heat and how to protect their four-footed best friends.

The Risks of Heat for Pets

Pets, like humans, can suffer from heat-related illnesses, but they are often more susceptible due to their inability to cool down as efficiently. Unlike humans, pets do not sweat through their skin; they primarily cool themselves through panting and, to a lesser extent, through their paw pads. This makes them vulnerable to overheating.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke is one of the most severe and potentially fatal conditions caused by excessive heat. It occurs when a pet’s body temperature rises to dangerous levels and they are unable to cool down.

Symptoms of heatstroke include:

  • Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
  • Drooling
  • Weakness or collapse
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, it’s crucial to act quickly. Move them to a cooler area, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian or the nearest veterinary emergency facility immediately. Unfortunately, we see heatstroke emergencies every year.

Dehydration

Dehydration is another common issue during the hotter months. Pets need constant access to fresh water, especially when the temperature soars.

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Dry gums and nose
  • Lethargy
  • Sunken eyes
  • Loss of skin elasticity

To prevent dehydration, always provide plenty of fresh water and encourage your pet to drink regularly. Be mindful that water in the sun especially in metal bowls may be hot and uncomfortable to drink.

Paw Pad Burns

Hot pavement, asphalt, and artificial turf can cause burns to your pet’s sensitive paw pads. Before taking your dog for a walk, test the temperature of the surface with your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Walking early in the morning or late in the evening when the ground is cooler is a safer option.

Tips to Keep Your Pets Cool and Safe

Here are some practical tips to help keep your pets safe during the hot summer months:

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car: Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a car can skyrocket in minutes, leading to heatstroke or worse.

Provide Ample Shade and Water: Ensure your pets have access to shady areas and plenty of fresh water when outside. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to keep it cool. During hot weather, please consider bringing outdoor pets inside to air-conditioned spaces.

Limit Exercise During Peak Heat: Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it’s cooler.

Monitor Your Pet: Keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of heat stress, especially if they are older, overweight, or have a medical condition.

Groom Appropriately: Regular grooming can help remove excess fur that can trap heat. However, avoid shaving your pet’s coat completely, as it provides some protection against sunburn.

Special Considerations

Different pets have different needs when it comes to staying cool. Brachycephalic breeds (those with short noses, like Bulldogs and Pugs) are especially prone to heat-related issues due to their compromised breathing. Additionally, pets with thick fur, elderly pets, very young pets, and those with medical conditions require extra attention during hot weather.

Conclusion

The summer months should be a time of fun and relaxation for you and your pets. By being aware of the dangers of heat and taking proactive steps to keep your pets cool and hydrated, you can ensure that they enjoy the season safely.
