National Cat Lovers Month

By December 17, 2024 No Comments

December is National Cat Lovers Month, a time to honor the ameowzing feline friends who purr their way into our hearts and homes. Whether you’re a lifelong cat owner or adore their antics from afar, there’s always more to learn about these fascinating creatures. At Friendship Animal Hospital, we’re dedicated to helping you keep your cats healthy, happy, and thriving. In celebration of this special month, we’ve gathered some fun cat puns and surprising facts about cats and cat ownership that we hope you love!

  1. Cats Are Master Nappers

If it seems like your cat spends most of the cat napping, you’re not imagining it. Cats sleep an average of 12–16 hours a day, which means they spend about two-thirds of their lives sleeping. This love of napping is an evolutionary trait—wild cats need to conserve energy for hunting, and our domestic companions have happily carried on the tradition.

  1. Cats Have Incredible Physical Abilities

Cats are natural acrobats! Thanks to their powerful hind legs, they can jump up to six times their body length (or about 216 temptations treats) in a single leap. And let’s not forget their famous ability to land on their feet—a skill called the “righting reflex.” This unique talent allows cats to twist their bodies mid-air to ensure a safe landing.  Let’s not forget a cat’s amazing reaction time of 20 – 70 milliseconds compared to a human’s 250 milliseconds.

  1. They’re Quietly Chatty

While dogs may bark their excitement for the world to hear, cats are more subtle communicators. Did you know that adult cats primarily meow to interact with humans, not other cats? They’ve learned that we respond to their vocalizations, and each meow is tailored to get your attention—whether they want food, a snuggle, or just to say hello.  From meowing to the beloved eek eek eek, the almost 100 different noises a cat can make can be hiss-terical.

  1. Cats Have Super Senses

A cat’s sense of hearing is so sharp that they can detect ultrasonic sounds that are inaudible to humans. Their whiskers (or vibrissa) aren’t just for show, either—these specialized hairs help them navigate tight spaces, detect changes in air currents, and even gauge the width of an opening.  Many cats purr-fer wider and flatter bowls that allow them to eat and drink without their whiskers touching the dish.

  1. Cats Are Good for Your Health

Owning a cat isn’t just good for your heart metaphorically; it’s good for your heart literally and we aren’t kitten you! Studies show that spending time with cats can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and decrease the risk of heart disease. The sound of a cat’s purr, which vib-purr-rates at 20–140 Hz, is even thought to promote healing and relaxation.

  1. Cats Are Popular Pets (For Good Reason!)

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), more than 25% of U.S. households include at least one cat. With their independent yet affectionate nature, it’s no wonder cats are such beloved companions.

Celebrate National Cat Lovers Month with Care

Whether you celebrate this month with a house panther, a tuxedo, or a cat of another color, don’t forget the importance of regular veterinary care. Annual wellness exams, dental check-ups, and vaccinations are all key to keeping your cat’s feline great. If it’s been a while since your cat’s last visit, now is a great time to schedule an apaw-intment.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Cats:

  • Adopt a Cat: If you’re ready to expand your family, consider adopting a cat from your local shelter.
  • Spoil Your Cat: Treat your cat to a new toy, a cozy bed, or extra playtime.
  • Share the Love: Post photos of your feline friend on social media and use hashtags like #NationalCatLoversMonth.
  • Support Cat Charities: Donate to organizations that work to improve the lives of cats in need.

From all of us at Friendship Animal Hospital, happy National Cat Lovers Month! Let’s make November a purr-fect celebration of everything we love about cats.
